Rwake – The Return of Magik

After thirteen years, Rwake is back with “The Return of Magik”. The album showcases their creativity as well as their skills. The seven musicians from Little Rock, Arkansas, have created an album. It confirms their status as sludge metal pioneers and expands their sound. The album was released on March 14, 2025 by Relapse Records. The six songs last 54 minutes. It is a masterpiece full of atmosphere and heaviness. The band combines swampy riffs with a progressive style and a special mysticism.

The very first notes of “You Swore We’d Always Be Together” set a standard. Rwake begins with an acoustic intro. It gently lures you in before a storm of sludge breaks loose. The interplay between guitarists John Judkins and Austin Sublett is captivating. Their riffs fit together. The track’s changes – from dreamy passages to crushing heaviness – show a band full of energy. The sound is impressive and moving.

The title track “The Return of Magik” is a highlight. Jeff Morgan’s drums drive the riffs. Chris Terry’s vocals alternate between roaring and screaming. The track shows the album motto: raw power, but with more beautiful moments. “With Stardust Flowers” explores cosmic doom. The band proves that they combine brutality and art with sprawling sounds and solos.

The centerpiece of the album is “Distant Constellations and the Psychedelic Incarceration”. The epic lasts 13 minutes. It is hypnotic and heavy. Brittany Fugate’s screams pierce the haze. Jim “Dandy” Mangrum of Black Oak Arkansas speaks words. There’s a surreal touch. The track builds up and discharges in a wall of sound. It echoes for a long time.

“The Return of Magik” shows emotional depth. Rwake doesn’t just play heavy metal. They feel it. They process life experience in a dark and solemn sound. The recording at East End Sounds in Hensley, Arkansas, gives space to every level. From the atmosphere to the distortion. The band is at its peak. They continue to evolve while staying true to their roots.
